Cubs

There are 16/17 active Cub Packs in the District. Some of them are at capacity with a Waiting List of young people waiting to join. The capacity of each pack will depend on certain factors, eg size of meeting place, number of adult leaders.

All packs are inclusive, accepting boys and girls with some having the ability to cater for young people of differing needs. Each Cub Pack is different but the Cub Scout Programme is similar for each pack and it includes the young people working for Badges and Awards. The scouting emphasis is on ‘learning by doing’ so the young people have lots of fun whilst learning new skills. The programme differs from pack to pack but includes weekly meetings, outdoor activities with the chance to experience Nights Away activities which might be as a sleepover in a local hall or a weekend (or maybe longer), camp or visit to an activity centre.

Despite the Pandemic Cub Scouting in Salisbury District has remained active throughout it all. During lockdowns many packs continued to meet every week albeit not Face to Face. Leaders, young people and parents learnt lots about technology during this time and old programmes were adapted to be delivered by Zoom. Cooking was a particular success, enjoyed by everyone and the Leaders didn’t have even to do the clearing up at the end of the meeting! Many of the Young People had the opportunity to experience Nights At Home rather than Nights Away and one pack even had a visit from Santa at their Christmas Sleepover. During Autumn 2021 young people had the opportunity to attend an Adventure Activity day at Barry’s Fields in Winterslow, where they experienced a climbing wall, a cave bus, archery, assault course, pioneering, bouncy castle and cooking over an open fire. Recently the whole District had a Camp at Foxlease in the New Forest where all the Young People had another opportunity to experience lots of adventurous activities.

As soon as each Lockdown finished and the guidelines allowed many packs were meeting Face to Face outside, braving wind, rain, sun, well whatever the English weather threw at us, then eventually packs were able to meet back indoors. Finally, some of the district competitions were able to return, a football tournament once again at Barry’s Fields, the Chess Tournament and Scrapheap Challenge.
