Scouts

There are seventeen active Scout Troops in the District at the present time. Some of these are at capacity and have waiting lists but many have spaces available. Obviously the size of the meeting place and the number of adult volunteers determine the maximum capacity of a Troop.

The programme structure is the same for each Scout Troop and is based around the many varied activity badges which cater for lots of different interests and the main core of nine Challenge Awards which make up the Chief Scouts Gold Award which is the highest award in the Scout Section.

Each Troop will run a varied range of activities which are fun and inclusive as well as encouraging learning and development such as team building games, pioneering, patrol challenges, hiking, rafting, model making, camping, problem solving, arts & crafts, environmental activities, growing plants, fundraising and cooking on stoves as well as open fires.

Each working group of Scouts is called a Patrol and has a Patrol Leader and an Assistant Patrol Leader as well as Patrol members. Typical names for different Patrols are usually animals such as Wolves, Bulls, Ravens and Curlews. Some Troops may have traditional Patrol names.

Whilst maintaining the core programme some Troops specialise in specific types of activity. For example, the 3rd Salisbury (Sea Scouts) have an emphasis towards water activities.

Climate Emergency Project with Salisbury Museum:

During the latter part of 2021 Scouts from the 4th Salisbury (Harnham) and 1st Laverstock Troops worked with Salisbury Museum on a project about the Climate Emergency.

Over 4 weeks (22 October, 5 November, 12 November, 19 November) Bridget Telfer the Museums Project Curator joined the Scout Troop meetings on a Friday night to explore the theme through games, discussions and museum objects. The Scouts examined some real artefacts from the museum, that help to tell the story of climate change and show the impact that humans are having on the natural world.

For the last two sessions the Scouts were joined by a professional film maker who taught the Scouts how to script a film, and then made a short film about the climate emergency. This features in an online Museum exhibition and also in our new Natural History Gallery at the museum (opening in 2024).
