On 2nd June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Wilton Beacon was lit by Bear Grylls and Lord Pembroke with Scouts from the 1st Wilton Scout Group and was filmed by the BBC.
Andrew Kinsey the Group Scout Leader and current Mayor of Wilton revealed that the 1st Wilton Scout Group had lit a beacon at the same site for the Queens Coronation in 1953 and that this spot was now marked by an oak tree which was planted at the time.
Bear Grylls met Explorer Scouts, Scouts, Cubs and Beaver Scouts from the group who have been running continuously since 1910. Following the lighting Bear Grylls gave a speech and both verses on the National Anthem were sung.
